FAQ
Frequently asked questions
I lost money in an online fraud. What should I do first?
Immediately call the national cyber crime helpline 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in, and inform your bank to block the account or card. Early reporting improves the chance of the funds being frozen before they are withdrawn.
Will the bank refund money lost in an unauthorised transaction?
Under RBI directions, a customer's liability is zero or limited if an unauthorised electronic transaction is reported promptly — generally within three working days — and the loss was not caused by the customer's own negligence, such as sharing an OTP or PIN.
How can I remove a fake profile or defamatory post?
Platforms are required to have grievance officers and to act on complaints within prescribed timelines. A formal complaint, followed by a legal notice or court order where necessary, is usually effective.
Can I claim compensation under the IT Act?
Yes. The IT Act provides for compensation for unauthorised access, data theft and damage to computer systems, and for failure by companies to protect sensitive personal data. Claims up to ₹5 crore are decided by the adjudicating officer.
